Recurring occasional pain in right big toe

When I was about 18 (I am now 25) I started having occasional pain in my big toe. It is a sharp but not particularly strong pain, and it never was bad enough or lasted long enough to really concern me. It lasts about 5 days and then goes away, sometimes for months, or even a year at a time. Two days ago the pain came back and is worse than before, and yesterday it actually had me limping for a moment. It hurts the worst when I am walking, but there is a slightly dull ache when sitting down as well. I'm thinking it's time I went to see a doctor about this because I am an avid backpacker and am afraid this could interrupt a good hike some day.

I have been reading about arthritis in the big toe and wonder if my condition could be related to it. Thanks so much for your help.
