Red spots on top of toes

Several weeks ago, I noticed a slight discomfort beginning in my right foot. When I would walk on that foot (especially in the morning), I felt a moderate discomfort in the toe next to the big toe. The pain felt as though I had a broken toe, though I could tell it was not broken. Closer examination showed a small red spot on the top of the toe, behind the joint. As the day progressed, the pain would subside, but each morning it became noticeable again. After a few days, it seemed to subside completely. A few days ago, the symptoms began to appear again. At first in was in the same spot, but now it has spread. The initial toe is now red across the entire top of the toe. I have also developed another red/irritated spot on a toe on my left foot. The pain is quite noticeable in the morning and it itches a lot while I'm sleeping. It has been getting noticeably worse over the past few days. Like I said, the spots are red, though the bigger spot on my 'index' toe appears to be slightly purplish as well. It looks like 3 spots that have merged together to form one large blemish (one behind the toenail, one on top of the joint, and the initial spot behind the joint). Other than that, there doesn't appear to be any scaling, drying, bumps, or anything else. I know that the obvious thing is to go see a doctor, but I am in a serious financial strain and really cannot afford to do this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
