Painful foot-calcium deposits

My daughter is having a awful time with her left foot, she has seen a doctor - had an xray -dr didn't know what it was at first thought it was a bunion, then spur but xray shows it not attached to bone- thinks it is calcium deposit and can't get into a specialist for a week, it is extremely painful - red, swollen some it is on left side of foot just down from big toe. She has an extremely hard time putting on socks or shoes or walking without extreme pain- what could it be when it is soooo painful she can't sleep at night? If it is calcium deposits would taking extra calcium help at all? Thank You
