bump on top of foot

I have a painful bump on top of my foot. It is to the left outer part directly where the shoe laces tie. I had an x-ray and it did not reveal anything. Could it be a bone spur or calcium deposit? What is the usual treatment for this condition? Taking Naproxen seems to help and also resting the foot. I can't be on medication forever or rest the foot. I usually walk about 2 miles a day 5x a week. Could it be caused from overuse? I am 50 years old. Thanks!
