pain from top of big toe to front of shin

Thank you for the opportunity to ask a question!

About a month ago, I began having severe pain on the top of my foot. It seems to originate at my big toe, run across the top of my foot and up the bottom portion of my shin. When I try to walk on it, I have a very sharp pain. When it is not bearing weight, example when I'm sitting, it aches and burns. I can trace the pain's path with my fingers and it is very sore to the touch.

I'm not sure if I injured it in any way. The only thing I can think of is that I was wearing open-toed Birkenstock (not sure of spelling) style clog sandals the night before the pain began. I have worn these shoes for over a year though without any previous problems.

I've tried manually stretching my foot by bending it upward and then downward, but nothing seems to help.

Could you give me your best guess on what might be causing this? Do you think it is something that will resolve on its own with time? How long should I wait to see a physician?

Thanks again for any information you care to share.
