foot pain

I sprained my foot very badly about 10 years ago - it was blackened top and bottom, and I was on crutches for about 6 weeks. As the incident occurred out in a remote area I was unable to see a doctor until the next day, by which time it was too swollen to cast, which the dr told me he would have done had I been able to come in right away. There was an xray taken at that time.

Since then, I have had recurring pain in my foot, centered over the top, slightly to the side - exactly where my foot bent backwards at the time of the sprain. Somtetimes other areas of my foot are affected too, but this is the center of the pain.

Several doctors have diagnosed plantar fasciitis, but I have doubts about that diagnosis, considering my injury and the fact that the pain is NOT centered in my heel, despite my heel being sometimes affected.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?
