burning toes

My father (in his 70's) has chronic burning in his toes. He has endured the pain for approx. a year, but pain has increased in intensity and duration. He has no other symptoms, but finds it even painful to drive when he puts pressure on his foot. He is not diabetic. The pain subsides only at night, but not during the day, even with feet elevated. The doc mentioned a nerve block. do you have any diagnosic or suggestions for relief?
