calcaneus problems

Three weeks ago I was walking outside, tried to step down one step and twisted ankle(to the outside of the foot) I fell flat on my face, heard a pop noise and immediately the top of my foot was black and blue. The swelling intensified over the next 24 hours and bruising continued all the way around the ankle. I went to the podiatrist he took x-rays. He really didnt think he saw a break but after looking at the foot and poking around, he gave me a diagnosis of a broken heel. He casted it, said stay off of it and see you in 4 weeks. My concern is this. Since the bruising started on top of my foot, is that ligament problems also? Should I have a MRI or just let the cast fix it all. After the fall I had very little problem bearing weight or pointing my toes, but if the foot turned to the left or right my favorite words were #@#@##. I may have complicated matter worse by walking on it for the first 24 hours after the fall. Does this diagnosis sound right? The other question I have is there any equipment out there other than crutches or a wheelchair to use to get around. I have fallen twice with crutches.. There has to be a better way
