Son with foot drop, options needed

Hi,
My 18 y.o. son has a bad motocross wreck where he broke hid tib/fib and femur. He developed compartment syndrome which went untreated and had a lot of muscle debridment and peroneal nerve damage. He was left with foot drop and ankle instability due to nerve damage. he has good planar flex and are looking at bracing options. We want something very low profile, perhaps hinged. What has been tried so far (custom moulded thermo plastic) is just to stiff and is like fusing the ankle.
Any options??? It also needs to be durable. Thanks
