5th metatarsal not healing

I broke my 5th metatarsal 8 weeks ago. Appt today revealed no bone growth. I am not a smoker, an average 35-yr fm, and the Dr. mentioned that the soft scar tissue has probably formed around the fracture and is not allowing for quick regrowth. Because I couldn't stand the thought of another cast, the Dr. finally agreed to a surgical boot. The Dr. warned me to be careful, take motrin, and call if I heard any snaps. We didn't discuss any other options if not healed at my next appt, in 4 weeks. Is surgery likely, or is there another alternative? Should I keep off my foot or start to walk on it, like I did when casted? Is there something I can do to promote bone growth (doing calcium supps)?

Thanks!
