Abnormal toe nail growth

A few years ago I was going up the stairs and my foot slipped off one of the steps. Unfortunately, the toe nail on my big toe caught the step on the way down and the nail was bent completely back until it pointed at the ceiling. I ended up pulling the toe nail out as it became obvious that it would not go back down flat.

The nail eventually grew back but I had another accident where I stubbed the toe and that resulted in the toe nail falling off again.

My problem now is that the nail hardly grows at all. It is very thick and only requires a slight trim maybe twice a year. I'm sure that this cannot be normal.

I'm wondering if this is something that I need to pursue with a local podiatrist. I have no discomfort from the toe. Just a little strange looking toe nail.
