Hyperextensive with Metatarsal Joint Pain

I am hyperextensive (tendons & ligaments like loose rubber bands) and have very bad metatarsal joint (big toe) pain when I walk. Due to being hyperextensive, walking is really the only "safe" exercise where I don't accidentally injure myself.

The problem is that after walking for only about a mile, the joint is swollen and aching. It takes about 4 days for the pain to go away. Perhaps it has something to do with my shoes, I wear running shoes. Perhaps a walking shoe would be better.
