Pain in my forefoot

My forefoot became sore a week ago and the next morning I woke up and could not put any weight on the foot and it was swollen. I went to a walk in clinic and they X-Rayed it and said I had a fracture in my seismoids. They set me up an appointment with an orthopedic and they put a splint on my foot and took some blood because they did not see any fractures. I went back to them yesterday and they removed the splint and said that I have an infection. How can I get an infection if there are no open wounds or fractures? They gave me some antibotics to take until I go back and see them next week but they did not put anything else on my foot which is swollen and I still cannot put any weight on it. If my foot is not elevated for a little bit, my toes start turning a dark color (almost black). What is going on with my foot?
