Shin AND ankle lumps with bruising and pain :(

My brother-in-law is 30 and used to jog but hasn't for a couple of years.

He had a hard lump on his shin with a bruise on it that was painful. It actually 'split' and became 2 separate lumps that disappeared after 2-3 months.

Now he has one on the back of his ankle (achilles tendon) and is limping. His GP says he doesn't know what's causing it but doesn't have much else to say.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? Can you have 'shin splints' on your ankle?
