ankle popped

Eight days ago while riding my dirtbike, I stopped, put my foot down and my left ankle felt like it popped out of joint. I immediately straightened it out and thought I would be ok. It only took one more step to discover otherwise. I went to the emergency room and had x-rays taken. The ER doctor told me it wasn't broken but a severe sprain. I have used ice, compression as well as elevation. There is no swelling but when I take a step the wrong way it feels like it is going out of joint again. How long should it take to get to where that out-of-joint sensation and pain goes away?
