Please help! Re: dx. foot/toe deformity

: My fiancee's mother has a deformed toe on her left foot. The fourth toe, next to the pinky toe, is grown out of the top of the foot rather than aligned with the rest of the toes. For descriptives sake, compare it to the left ring finger growing out of the knuckle area of the hand rather than in line with the other 4 fingers. Is there a diagnosis for this and is it genetic-if he and I have children, is this something I should be concerned about? Please help as searching the internet is futile. Thanks so much.
