tendon injury

I did something to my ankle 3 nights ago. Specifically, it feels like the fibularis brevis tendon (I looked it up in an anatomy/physiology text) is slipping out of place and then back in.
The first time it felt horribly painful and swelled up. It's been recurring at least daily since, with diminishing pain and no swelling.
I've figured out that to avoid having it recur, I should not do anything involving me on just my right foot. However, I play a lot of sports and that's just not feasible for me to do, long-term.

So my questions are:
1) How do I go about healing this?
2) What specifically causes this to happen? and
3) What should I avoid doing in the future?

Thank you for your help!
