Untreated subungal hematoma; nail not recovering?

One day while doing a lot of walking around, I apparently got a subungal hematoma under my big toe. It was very dark and discolored, and pretty large, but it didn't hurt, so I didn't see a doctor.

It's five months later and my toenail has not gotten back to normal, in fact, it looks really bad - the blood looks dried and is fading, but now I notice there's a sort of pale yellowish area around it under the nail. The yellowish area stays within the boundary of the bruise/blood spot. This area hasn't spread, so I'm wondering - is it a fungus, did my nail bed die, what's going on? Is there any home remedy for this, or do I need to see a doctor?

Worn daily for a few minutes to several hours, the night splint, over time has been clinically proven to reduce the pain and discomfort of plantar fasciitis and other overuse injuries of the lower leg.
