toe numbness

I am experiencing a strange sensation on "just" the outside of my right toe. The numbness is only in a small area on the outside of the toe, at the first joint right below the nail. I experiene no pain at all. This condition has persisted for about a month. I contacted my physician and he refered me to a nerve specialist. I cancelled the appointment and got another one with a podiatrist. I last had my physical, including a prostrate exam this past summer. Nothing abnormal was noted. I am 50, Hispanic, and my grandmother was diabetic. Please advise
Thanks
