"Jones Fracture" on both feet

I have just found out recently the root cause of my currently annoying foot pain. I have breaks/fractures on the fifth metatarsal on my right and left foot. Both have been there for a very long time (From my teenage years? I am 37) and probably are never going to heal on their own. The Dr. suggested removing the fractured bone and re-attaching the tendon to a more stable place. What I would like to know is what are the success rates of such procedures? If I don't do this are both my feet going to continue to deteriorate as I get older? Now I can't stand for more that 30 minutes without an enormous amount of pain.
