An X-ray would be necessary to see the fracture. If it is in good alignment, then your doctor should show you how to splint it. Do not splint the big toe to the others. The 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th toes can be splinted to each other. I usually use a foam pad between each toe to cushion and support before using tape. A tape that stretches allows for swelling and is easier to use than simple adhesive tape. Wear whatever shoe or sandal you are comfortable in. Ice compression rest and elevation are the gold standards of treatment. It will take up to 6 weeks to heal. See your doctor and good luck.
