Injured ankle/foot

I missed a step on a staircase six days ago. My ankle twisted as I fell to the ground. I immediately iced it and have been alternating treatments of hot whirlpool and ice ever since, along with taking OTC naproxen. I have also been wearing an ace bandage. My foot, ankle and toes are all still swollen and stiff, and my toes and heel are badly bruised. And I sometimes feel tinglingat the base of my foot in the front. The pain is not too bad....I was on vacation when it happened and actually walked around A LOT all week (probably not the best thing to do). My questions:

Do the symptoms warrant an x-ray?

Is it wise to do the hot/cold thing?
Or should I just stick with ice? Or, at this point, does it matter anymore?

Thanks.

A silicone insert on the back of the Achillotrain leaves tendon pressure-free and provides intermittent compression for the reduction of swelling and edema.
