Personally, I dislike the term "growing pain." I do not believe that it should hurt to grow, and if it did, why isn't it true for everyone?

Without examining your son, I can't be sure, but the first thing that comes to mind is possibly an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel or calcaneal apophysitis. Rest, ice, Advil or Aleve (if not allergic) heel cushions are entry level things to try. Otherwise, further evaluation by a podiatrist is indicated.
