swollen toe

My toe has been swollen for about two weeks. It is the toe next to my littlest toe, and it is probably a bit longer than most peoples for this particular toe. The doc I visited thought the swelling was probably because it got too cold. I cross-country ski nearly every day in winter and my ski boots are snug. So, one reason this swelling has probably lingered because I have continued to put my foot in "tight" situations. Besides trying to avoid irritating it with these tight fits, is there anything else I can do to get the swelling down faster? The doctor wasn't much help on this and said it may take 2 to 3 months...

This slip-on device is a soft and stretchable Nylon/Lycra® fabric molded with a proprietary gel pad to protect the entire Achilles tendon of the foot by absorbing pressure and friction resulted from rubbing with the surface of the shoe.
