swelling/pain in both ankles

4 weeks ago I began a workout routine and after 1 week and 4 visits to the gym...I could barely walk! I didn't experience any notable injury, but I did ride the exercise bike "vigorously". Both ankles became extremely swollen and sore and bruised looking. At night and in the morning walking was very painful. I eventually went to the DR and he basically just agreed that yes they were swollen and prescribed anti-immflamatories. I took them for several days and then skipped a dose and when I woke up the next day I was worse off then before...10x more painful. Now I am afraid to stop taking the pills for fear of what it will feel like...the ankles are still somewhat swollen too. The DR basically seems to think that no matter the cause or the problem with the ankle the solution is the same...rest, ice, strategies to keep the swelling down. Should I press to find out more of what may be wrong? If there are tendon or ligament injuries should I know this? How long is OK to have painful swollen ankles...even while taking the pills? Thanks for any advie!
