toe with a mind of its own - ouch

My second toe on my left foot occasionally takes on a life of its own and is excruciatingly painful. When I point my toes, sometimes just when I'm putting on my socks, my second toe starts pulling downward toward the floor and pulls to the right. It hurts like blazes and I ccannot just pull it back into place - it just springs back to where it belongs. Massaging it doesn't do anything, though walking on it seems to help it work itself out.

This has been going on since childhood, though then only a couple times a year, now at least once a week. And now my 4th toe is starting to do the same thing.

I am a normally healthy 40 year old woman who rarely wears high heels (doesn't seem to coincide anyway). I am fairly sedentary though I do chase my two small kids around a lot when I am not at the office. I basically have a desk job. I do not have diabetes or any other disorder that I know of.

Any idea what is going on or what I can do about it?

Thanks, Carol

Lined with soft fabric on both sides, this ~2mm thick SiliposŪ proprietary gel pad is an excellent cushion to help relieve the burning sensation and discomfort of the five metatarsal heads of the foot (the ball-of-foot) by protecting the ball of foot from repeated friction and abrasion with the shoes.
