My mom's Shattered Heel

Dear Sirs:

I was in a Car accident with my mother three days ago. I am doing this in the hospital right now. The orthopedic surgeon fixed my moms knee and he said my moms shattered Heel is better left alone. Two Questions. 1. How will it heel with no heel bone there now? 2. What is my mom going to do without that heel bone? Will she be able to walk on it after the 8 weeks of healing said to be done?
