2nd toe pain when running

I get a numbness and burning at the tip of and along the medial side of my second toe when I run. I can simulate the problem by pressing on the ball of my foot between the big toe and second toe, but only right after exercise. The burning goes away after running, but the numbness remains. This problem has been around for about a year. There is not swelling or discoloration. X-rays have rule out a fracture. Any advice?
