Kelly, I have had this same problem since I was about 10 years old, it was extremely painful at times and it eventually stopped hurting as much however it is still painful if I am on my knees doing any kind of work related activity. I am now 52 years old and still very active except not much in basketball anymore , only occasionaly and my knees hurt terribly after that. My oldest son did not get this wnderful gift however my daughter did and currently my youngest son is suffering through it at the age of 13, that is how I found out about your problem. I too went to the internet to see what I could find to help him, I do not want him suffering as I did and still do. I have asked docters about it and they are very dissmissing of it.
