A shot of cortisone does not have to be as horrible as patients think. I will numb the area with a local anesthetic first, then inject the cortisone. As far as surgery goes, your doctor is following the standard most would. The plantar fibroma has a significant rate of reoccurrence. I do not know of any statistics relating to the occurence of hammertoes after this procedure. Most fibromas are on the medial band of the plantar fascia and therefore not really in line to affect the toes.
