Achilles tendon rupture, late diagnosis

My 36 year old son injured his Achilles tendon playing soccer two months ago. Our MD stated it was tendonitis. We went to a F&A specialist yesterday who suggested an MRI with the diagnosis of a torn or partially torn Achilles tendon. The only treatment he suggests is surgery with a tendon transplant. Is there a less invasive alternative?
