painful bump on the bottom of heel

I have had a bump on the bottom of my left heel for about three months now. It is very painful in the morning when I wake up and hurts if I put my foot flat on the something such as a tile surface. It feels better when I wear shoes. I was told by my mother-in-law that it could be a planters wart and that I can only have it removed surgically. I am planning on going on a school hiking trip with my daughters school in two weeks from now and I don't have health insurance at the moment. I have also heard of something called a Planter Fasciitis and want to know the difference between this condition and the Planters Wart. Is there anything I can do on my own so that I can attend this trip with my daughter. I would be so appreciative if you could advise me on this.
