Numbness front part of feet

For about 5 or 6 years, I have had numbness in the bottom of both feet beginning at the balls of the feet and forward to the toes. The numbness lessens as you move from the big to to the last (smallest toe). Not much numbness on the top of the toes.
Sometimes it hurts in the balls of the feet, but mostly the numbing sensation is just plain irritating. It also feels like I have a sock stuck in both of my shoes. When I take off my shoes, it feels like I'm walking on marble even when I'm walking on soft carpetning with padding.
My M.D. says it's peripheral neuropathy, and basically said there isn't anything that can be done. He's tried some B vitamins, but it hasn't helped. I am NOT diabetic. Do I have to just live with this? It interferes with my sleep and is a little bit like constant torture.

Thanks for any help,

Bill
