after surgery

I had surgery about 4 months ago. This is what I had done an osteotomy when a wedge of bone is taken out of the big toe and or metatarsal to 'straighten' the big toe (screws, plates or wires are used to hold the bones in place while they heal. The concern is my foot is shifting again towards the small toes and doctor recommended semi-ridge orthotics. I just got them yesterday. Doctor says it will help raise and align the foot/toe. I am not convinced at all and I have questioned him three times about it. He is the doctor so he should know but I am concerned. Am I not understanding the purpose of these orthotics? Or is the foot problem not really fixed?

Please help?
Thanks
Tina
