Sprained ankle

I have had very weak ankles all my life. Now I'm spraining them badly about once a year - enough to spend a week on crutches. I've seen orthopedists and they say nothing except fusion surgery can be done. Not something I want to do, because I've seen how that can end up...more crippled than before. Is there a brace I can wear everyday that won't get in the way of wearing everyday shoes? That may keep me from injuring my ankles as often?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This slip-on device is a soft and stretchable Nylon/Lycra® fabric molded with a proprietary gel pad to protect the entire Achilles tendon of the foot by absorbing pressure and friction resulted from rubbing with the surface of the shoe.
