Numb Foot for awhile now

I'm wondering if the way I sit has anything to do with this, but the outer half of my left foot has been numb for a few months now. I went to my college nurse about it, and she administered some sort of test where she touched different spots of my foot with a pin or something like that and told me to tell her if i could feel each poke. I could. So no serious damage then right? THEN WHY IS MY FOOT STILL NUMB? It feels like half of it is asleep, just to the point where I can barely sense a touch. I often sit cross legged for long periods of time, and i'm wondering if that might be why? But its been like this for months now!
