A severe reacuring pain in my ankle

I am 44 years old and have been treated for Plantar Facia since 1991.I have controlled it very well with good arch supports and stretching along with some treadmill work. My problem now is in the last several years about once a month or more I will get a moderate to severe pain at the top of ankle where the leg meets the foot. It almost spans from ankle bone to ankle bone and can feel like a knife is being worked back and forth as I try to walk. The pain is only present during movement while supporting my weight (200 lbs.) and will come on in a manner of one step. The odd thing is it will go away after maybe 15 minutes or a couple of hours just as quickly as it came on and It will feel fine other than the fatigue feeling in the area where the pain was. I have searched online for sometime now for someone with similar symptoms but have not found any. It seems silly to go back to the Podiatrist when I know I'll have no discomfort or problem of any kind when I get there. Can anyone identify with me?
