Hi ya, I had similar problems! my toe nail began to shink in size, and the flesh became more painful. I left this for around a year, but the end of it, every step was agoney for months till i went to the doctors.
My toe was cronicaly infected, I was put on antibiotices for 2 weeks... and it all went... currently i have a new toe nail growing under my old toe nail (sounds horrible!) lol but its good. Go to your doctor, it could be infected, and if left fora while like mine it may only get worse
