Without examining your foot I can not be specific. Possibilities include a capsulitis, rheumatoid nodule, synovitis or ganglion cyst. A sonogram or MRI might give more information as soft tissue swelling is better seen on these than an x-ray.

Lupus is in the family of autoimmune diseases as is rheumatoid arthritis. The arthritis starts in the soft tissue joint capsule first before the bone is eventually affected.

I am curious as to what type of doctor did you see?
