Pain in left side of foot

I have always mainly been a swimmer and short sprinter, but the other day it was nice outside so I decided to do more of a distance run. I ran about 2 1/2 miles which is a lot for me and it was the first time I had run in about 8 months. I did stretch before I went, but now I have extreme, shooting pain on the left side of the left foot between my pinky toe and ankle. It is not like the sore pain I normally get when I start working out, it feels like a "bad" pain. One of my friends who is a frequent runner told me my shoes might have been too heavy. I was wondering if you knew what might have cuased this and how to help it.
