swollen ankle

last mon, I woke up with alot of pain under my L heel and by the next eve, had a swollen L ankle. It continues to be swollen and very painful-heel pain has subsided. I have been to e.r and m.d. xrays showed no injury - they came up with possible tendonitis, and or sprained ankle. I have had previous sprains and this is not what this is. It is different and anyway , how could a sprain just come on after heel pain?? I get warm sensations through my ankle intermittently. It is not red, or very warm to touch. Circulation is fine, no other part of my foot is swollen exept L outer side of ankle and towards the back around my achilles is puffy. Any suggestions. Any clues to what this may be. I have 3 small children and walk for exersize appx 40min per day and have not all week due to this.
