hereditary multiple osteochondromas and sports fitness

I injured my foot running on Sunday, 5-4-05 (after about 3.5 miles at a 9.5 minute/mile pace). When I went to my primary care physician he suggested that I had to give up distance running permanently because of my multiple ostoechondromas, variously labelled as "hereditary multiple exostoses", "multiple cartiligenous exostosis," or "multiple ostoechondromas." He suggested that due to this condition I was at increased risk of sports-related injury.

Further, he suggested that I could not participate in mountaineering (I was planning on climbing a 6,000-meter peak in July) due to an increased likelyhood on injury with my hereditary condition. Suffice it to say this has me a bit concerned.

I consider this to be ridiculous as I have already run 5 marathons over the past year and 1/2 with no ill effect (besides the standard day of stiffness expected after a 26-mile run). My left foot injury appears to be a random strain/sprain injury common to other runners.

I wonder if anybody knew of any independent studies regarding my condition and increased likelyhood of sports injury. I have been unable to find any at this time. I also wondered if anybody had any experience with this sort of thing.
