In answer to your question- yes x-rays depending on the way they are shot can have artifacts.

Some of the possibilites you may be seeing are a bone cyst (fairly common and often not a problem)or an area of radiolucency that is commonly noted in the calcaneus.

A comparison view of the other foot might be helpful.
