Chronic Heel Pain

My pain is at the back of my heel - it's swollen and is very painful when I have weight on it - sometimes I get a small amount of pain when I am not walking. I went to see a podiatrist - said it's been caused by a tight achilles tendon over the years causing my flat feet, possible very small stress fracture, most of the problem is in the soft tissue. Says the only treatment is to rest it with a boot that comes up to my knee for 6-8 weeks (might help) or surgery to lengthen tendon.
Is there any other treatment - wearing a good pair of
sneakers feels better that any other shoe, but I can't wear them to my office job. Immobilizing my foot for such a long time is going to be very hard.
Thanks for any suggestions -
