It certainly is possible that your toe might be broken. An x-ray would be indicated. As far as the "nothing can be done" myth, it always aggravates me when patients mention that. Of course there is lots that can be done. Why should the foot not be treated, but every other part of the body is? There are many things that can be done ranging from splinting to even wearing a cast boot.
If you are having trouble then I recommend you see a podiatrist.
