Toenail swollen?

I played basketball a few days ago and noticed that my big toe was stubbed from a friend who came down from a rebound. Yesterday the toenail had some buildup of blood underneath the nail, and the nail was loose on my big right toe. I managed to lift up enough on the toenail to release the pressure and to release the pus from underneath it. Today, the toenail is a little purple, but is stable and strong on the big toe. It looks as if the toenail is still alive but I'm not sure if it is or not. Today there doesn't look like there is much pressure underneath the toenail. What do you suggest I do to heal this situation? Is there any household tool I can use to make a little hole in the middle of the nail to help release any additional pressure...and will my toenail stay alive or will it die and fall off? Right now it looks as if the toenail is ok and is back solid on my toe, with a little purpleness and when I woke this morning my big toe hurt, but now that i'm up it doesn't even hurt. I can't afford to go to a doctor since I don't have medical insurance. There is a little red area under the nail where my friend came down on it (initial impact) but look as if I leave it alone and heal, the toenail won't come off and it'll heal.
